Hughesville High School BOYS BASKETBALL RECORDS

Hughesville Spartan Boys Basketball Highlights

Celebrating champions and PIAA playoff teams…

1956 – The 1956 edition of Spartan Basketball was truly one of the great teams in school history.  The squad, coached by Ken Mincemoyer, won the West Branch Championship that year.  This team had the distinction of winning the only Boy’s Basketball championship in school history, which lasted 50 years.  Their 25 wins are the second most in Hughesville history.

1992 – The first Hughesville team to ever appear in the PIAA playoffs gave Trinity a battle in the first round before eventually falling 51-46.  The 1992 team finished 3rd in districts and compiled a 20-8 record.  It was the first 20-win season by a Hughesville team since the 1956 squad.

1993 – Returning a core of talented players from the previous year’s 20-game winner, Coach Phil Soohy’s team went 23-5 and again qualified for states after a 3rd place finish in Districts.  In the first round of the PIAA tournament, they fell to state powerhouse, Reading Central Catholic.  District IV All-stars Bart Clementoni and Chad Wagner, as well as defensive ace Matt Barto and career games played leader (103) Doug Fought led this team.

2006 – Among the best teams in school history, this senior-laden group had a historical season that jumpstarted the most successful era of Hughesville Spartan Basketball to date.  The Spartans ended the season with a record of 23-5 and won the school’s first ever District IV championship before losing in the first round of states.  Point guard Andrew Shaner, high scoring wings Taylor Volpe and Kody Webb, and big men Jordan Kilbourn, Dan Egly and Adam Shaner took Spartan Basketball to unchartered territory.

2007 – After losing 95% of their scoring from the previous year’s class, this young team wasn’t expected to do much.  Instead, this blend of inexperienced seniors and talented underclassmen won 17 games and returned to the PIAA tournament for a second straight year.  Once there, the Spartans nearly won Hughesville’s first ever state-playoff game, losing to Tulpehocken in overtime.

2008 – While still relatively young, this Spartan team had experience.  That experience was clear throughout a school record winning 26-3 season that culminated with the program’s first CSC II championship, second District IV championship, and first state-playoff victory.  This season marked a school-record third consecutive trip to the state tournament, where a loss to Imhotep Charter in the sweet 16 ended the historic campaign.  Combining schedule difficulty with the onslaught of accolades received vaulted this Spartan team ahead of the rest.  Despite only a three year run on varsity, the senior class of Derek Benedict and Josh Crownover were part of a school record 66 wins during their careers.

2009 – Entering the season with twelve returning lettermen and great expectations, this edition of Spartan Basketball ended a roller coaster season on a high note.  Despite several losses at the buzzer, and a poor performance in the District IV championship game, the Spartans regrouped to defeat state powers Holy Cross, Philadelphia West Catholic, and Trinity to earn a birth in the PIAA AA Final Four.  For a second straight season, Philadelphia’s Imhotep Charter ended the Spartans state run.  The seven point loss to the eventual state champions left Hughesville one game shy of a state championship birth at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center.  The team finished with a 23-6 record, ranked #4 in Pennsylvania, and with a share of the inaugural Heartland Athletic Conference championship.  The senior class of Rezin Davis, Bryan Hoover, Drew Eiswerth, Grant Heydenreich, and Kyle Stubbs finished their careers with a record of 89 wins and 25 losses and left as the most successful class in program history.

2010 – The most successful campaign in program history was full of adversity from the very beginning as starting forward Andy Laychur was lost for the season to injury.  In all, Spartan rotation players missed 59 games but expectations would still be met because of the team’s superior leadership, depth, and evolution into one of the best defensive teams in District IV history.  Despite not being picked as the favorite in either the conference or the district, this Spartan team won their third consecutive PHAC Championship, third District IV AA Championship in five years, and finished #5 in Pennsylvania for AA teams (#19 overall).  The team then advanced to the PIAA Quarterfinals with a win over Dunmore and a thrilling comeback victory over Devon Prep before an agonizing loss at the hands of an old nemesis ended its season.  The class of 2010 forever left their mark on Hughesville Athletic history breaking the program record for wins with 91.  Displaying leadership and steady play Brian Gerney, Greg Taggart, Jordan Holmes, Addison Hanford, Jonathan Hoot, Ryan Akers, and Bryce Pardoe ended their record-breaking careers with an exclamation point and gave Spartan fans a lot to cheer about.

2011 – A group that had not received much respect statewide, or even locally, entering the season clearly had everyone’s respect at the end.  After losing the most decorated athletic class in school history, many expected that 2010-2011 would be a rebuilding season for Spartan Basketball.  A collection of tough-minded seniors and underclassmen had other ideas.  After an up and down regular season, which included painful last minute defeats that eliminated what would have been a fourth straight conference title, this group of Spartans got it together down the stretch.  Nine straight wins followed, including dramatic buzzer beating wins in the semi-finals and finals of the District IV AA tournament, as this Spartan team won another district title and advanced to the sweet 16 in Pennsylvania for a fourth straight season.  Seniors Torin Jeffreys, Dylan Lesher, Brett Diehl, Ian Bubb, Aaron Hufnagel, Pat James, and Germano Viezze capped their stellar careers the same way they came in.
